A veteranus was a soldier who had completed his term of service in the legion. Many soldiers chose to spend their retirement near to the fortress where they had served. Often it was too far for them to make the long journey back to their own country. Others had met local women and raised families with them. Crispus decided to end his days at Chester close to his old comrades. His gravestone does not mention where he was born. Latin
