Record number: CHEGM: 1999 6 93

Object name: inscribed tombstone

Description: Fragment of a tombstone with part of the right and a fragment of the left margin remaining.

Period: Roman

Place found: North Wall (East), Chester

Date: 1887

Inscription: ...AN XXVI / TVRMA VILIX / FRATER FEC
...] an(norum) xxvi turma VILIX frater fec(it)
... aged 26, in the cavalry troop VILIX. His brother set this up.
VILIX (or possibly VIIIX). Vilix as a name seems to be quite unparalleled, and may be a conflation of the name of the decurion of the troop with that of the brother. In this case the brother might habe been called Felix. Latin
